The Enrichment Program

The Enrichment Program focuses on bringing distinguished scientists to the institution to share scientific expertise. Typically, a visiting scientist will meet with five to eight Center members for 30-40 minutes each. Generally, pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows working in fields aligned with that of the visiting scientists also participate, either separately or along with one of the Center investigators.

Visiting scientists are asked to present seminars and meet individually with members of the Diabetes Center to discuss shared research interests and concerns.

Since 1992, the Diabetes Center has planned joint sponsorship of visiting scientists with preclinical and clinical departments and obtained support from other institutional or private sources.  In 1993, 1999 and 2001, this included a $6,000 Pfizer visiting professorship in diabetes management awards.

Joint sponsorship with other departments continues in order to maximize external interactions within the approved Enrichment Program budget.  This approach strengthens the scientific interactions pertaining to Diabetes Center activities within our own research community as well.

If you would like to recommend a distinguished scientist for the Enrichment Program, or help sponsor one, please contact Dr. Eugene Barrett, Diabetes Center Director  (434) 924-1175, 1263 or ejb8x@Virginia.EDU .
