Research Description

The Harris laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms regulating the activity of the mTOR complexes as well as the downstream effectors of these complexes. We are interested in understanding how the mTOR signaling pathway regulates cellular lipid synthesis, particularly phosphatidic acid, an intermediate lipid in the Kennedy pathway of triacylglycerol and phospholipid synthesis, but also an important signaling lipid. Because cancer cells require an enormous amount of cellular lipid synthesis for proliferation as well as for signaling, understanding the mechanisms regulating their production could be an important component of cancer therapy
