The Sleep Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia General Clinical Research Center contains multi-channel polygraphs with computer acquisition and analysis. Data can be obtained in two sleep rooms, while a third room is used to acclimate patients to the laboratory environment. A full sleep staging montage is routinely performed in protocols that require sleep monitoring. These tests include electrocardiograms, right and left extraoculograms, central and occipital electroencephalograms, electromyograms, and recordings of various respiratory variables including oxygen saturation, airflow, and respiratory efforts with calibrated instruments, such as esophageal probes. To minimize any disturbances of sleep patterns, a unique blood drawing system is set up in each sleep room allowing sample collection outside the sleep study room. The Sleep Research Laboratory is utilized by a diverse group of investigators from areas including pulmonary, endocrinology, cardiology, and gastroenterology. Paul M. Suratt, MD GCRC Sleep Lab
