Overview
The Assay Core Laboratory is an essential
facility within the GCRC with a mission of providing high quality assay
services to GCRC investigators. The lab offers tests that are
either not run by the University Hospital Clinical Laboratory (e.g.
cytokines) or tests that can be offered at a significant
discount. Services include the characterization and validation of
new assay methods requested by GCRC investigators and the enhancement
of current methods to address research demands.
Since its inception in 1980, the Core
Laboratory has advanced from a Radioimmunoassay Core that ran two
hormone assays to a state-of-the-art assay facility with a high
through-put automated analyzer (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics) and an
expanded test menu. During the past five years, the services of
the lab have expanded from 20 assays to 43 assays, and the expansion of
the Core's test menu is the result of a conscious effort to diversify
services to support the increasing number of clinical protocols in
cardiovascular, cancer, and immunology
research.
The research needs of GCRC investigators form the basis for decisions
regarding the types of assays performed by the Core Laboratory.
At its inception, the primary focus of the Core was to provide services
for high volume tests (i.e., 70-300 samples per run). More
recently, the Core Lab staff's efforts have also been directed toward
performing lower volume tests. When selecting new
instrumentation, the Core Lab management places a high priority on the
equipment's capacity to run a diverse menu of tests using high-tech
methodologies. Our current systems are the Immulite 2000, BioTek
EL 800 ELISA system, and the Bio-Plex Multiplex
Analyzer (See links below).
CORES Billing System
The GCRC bills through the CORES billing system.
Investigators new to using CORES should e-mail Callen Molenda
(acm7h@virginia.edu) for information and access.
Investigators should direct questions about specific CORES assay
charges to the Core Lab Staff and questions about PTAO's to Ms.
Molenda.
