Bio of Dr. Farhy
Leon Farhy, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism,
Department of Medicine, University of Virginia.
Dr. Farhy is Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, University of Virginia. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Sofia University and research expertise in endocrinology and biomathematics. He works in the field of diabetes and endocrinology motivated by the belief that combining experimental methods with systems-level understanding and advanced mathematical reconstruction provides unique advantage in biomedical research. His interdisciplinary studies bring together clinical and laboratory work with mathematical analysis, simulations, and modeling. He is principal investigator of several local and NIH-funded projects including:
Ø Network control of glucagon secretion, NIH/NIDDK R01DK082805 (2010-15)
Ø Insulin-Glucose-Glucagon Network: Defining a type 1 diabetes progression model, NIH/NIDDK DP3DK106907 (2015-18)
These studies investigate time-varying relationships between hormones and how they impact endocrine function and glucose metabolism. Dr Farhy studies the defects of glucagon counterregulation in diabetes and is interested in identifying strategies for their repair for more effective and safe glycemic control. He lives in Charlottesville with his family and enjoys music, electronics, and woodworking. Quality food and wine is a must.
