Students & Mentors: A Team Approach

Selecting a mentor is a key step in your success as UVA MSTP students. All first and second year medical students are required to complete at least 3 summer lab rotations before transitioning into a graduate program. These rotations are essential in helping find a mentor who is conducting research in a field that is interesting and challenging. The MSTP Directors take all the care and time necessary to assist you in finding the right lab. This often is a hot topic during the monthly lunch meetings. The Program Director and Associate Directors screen each of our 150 approved mentors very carefully.

  • 150 rigorously screened and experienced mentors to choose from
  • Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics Departments ranked top ten in the nation.
  • ~$200 million of grant funding in the School of Medicine each year.

BIG news! The Center for Brain Immunology and Glia, directed by Jonathan Kipnis, PhD opened its doors last September!
