Liz Thompson Feature Student

Liz Thompson entered the MSTP in August 2004 after graduating from The College of William and Mary. She completed her PhD and returned to clerkships in October of last year. Liz worked in Victor Engelhard’s lab studying the CD8 T cell response to tumors and the ability of tumors to attract and activate naïve T cells. Her work was published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine. While at UVA, Liz served as Social Chair for the MSTP for three years and was a student interviewer. She has loved her time in the UVA MSTP but is excited to graduate in 2012

RESEARCH and MENTORS

RESEARCH and MENTORS

MSTP Featured Mentor: Vic Engelhard, PhD

Victor H. Engelhard, PhD Professor of Microbiology since 1989, has mentored many MSTPs in recent years. Currently there are 4 of our students in his lab: Grad 2s Sherin Rouhani and Dave Peske, Grad 6 Jarish Cohen, and until recently, Liz Thompson who received her PhD in May 2011.

Dr Engelhard’s research “centers on understanding immune responses to tumors, and defining ways to enhance it for therapeutic purposes… these immune responses are usually dependent on CD8 T lymphocytes, which recognize specific antigens displayed on the surface of the tumor cells.” Congratulations and we wish you continued success!

In Progress presentation.

A UVA MSTP tradition of our own.

We gather, socialize, have dinner together and listen to presentations by faculty, students and invited guests.

Attendance is mandatory if a student would like access to travel funds and to stay in good standing with the program.

Guidelines for the different presentations can be found in the Student Handbook. Find the current schedule here.
