The University of Virginia has achieved an international reputation through its comprehensive programs, expanding and pace setting research and ability to attract leading scholars to its faculty.  With the second highest endowment of any state affiliated university in the United States, its comprehensive and multidisciplinary programs  are continuously evolving consistent with the vision and practical approach of its founder, Thomas Jefferson.  The rural ambiance of central Virginia combined with the diversified and cosmopolitan communities surrounding the University  to offer a uniquely pleasant life style. With Washington D.C. one hundred and ten miles to the north and Richmond seventy miles to the east, there is also easy access to major northeastern/southern cities as well as  to beaches and mountains.

Integral to the University is its School of Medicine with over one thousand medical and graduate students supported by a faculty of seven hundred.  Its balanced program of teaching, research and patient care, attract over three thousand one-hundred applicants for its class of one hundred and thirty-nine entering in 2002.  Sixty-five percent of those admitted are from Virginia, with the others coming from throughout the nation.  Over sixty percent are females, with a minority enrollment exceeding -- percent, one of the highest of any non-minority School of Medicine in the United states.  (Among the nations top biomedical research schools in the country, its federal grants exceeded seventy-three million dollars in 1997.)  Clinical teaching is accomplished in the new six hundred bed University Medical Center convenient to classrooms and laboratories.  Training is also provided in the rural and urban locations throughout Virginia. A collegial atmosphere encourages collaboration with the greater University while fostering close relationships between faculty and students.
