The missions of the Cell Biology Department are to make significant new discoveries in the areas of cell, developmental, and regenerative biology and to educate and train a cadre of young scientists to prepare them to explore these and other areas of biomedical science.

The Allen Institute for Cell Science launched on 8 December with $100M from billionaire businessman and philanthropist Paul Allen - to be led by Rick Horwitz, who is on leave from UVa.


John Herr, professor of Cell Biology, is one of two faculty members from UVa to be named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors.
