Attendance

students at 2011 thesis presentationStudent participation in GSP activities is crucial in helping to build and foster our sense of community.  As such, students are expected to attend as many of the lunch meetings as possible.  This requirement applies to both formal, curricular lunch meetings as well as informal, social gatherings.  Specifically:
 

Pre-clinical Period (Semesters 1-3)

  • Attend at least 60% of all GSP lunch sessions
  • Meet with GSP mentor at least twice each year

 

Clinical Period (Semesters 4-8)

  • Attend as many of the lunch meetings as rotation and elective schedule permits
  • Meet with GSP mentor at least twice each year
  • 4th year:  Attend and participate in, the GSP 4th year elective and attend the thesis rehearsal session and thesis presentation

 

Attendance at Professional Conferences

The Generalist Scholars Program follows the policies and procedures set by the UVa School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs.  Attendance at a medically-related conference is allowed if the student is a participant, e.g., has a poster presentation or platform presentation, is a panelist, etc. or is expected to participate in professional development activities that are congruent with the GSP mission.
 
Attendance at conferences that entail missing mandatory class activities should be communicated in advance to the student's advising dean or his/her representative in the Office of Student Affairs.
 
Procedure for requesting approval for GSP-related conferences and scholarship funding for such conferences:
 
  1. Notify the GSP Administrator, Dela Alexander (da7r@virginia.edu; 434-982-6317), by September 1, or as early as possible in the school year, of any conferences you would like to attend.
  2. Funds are limited.  Requests will be considered on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Submit a brief written request with:
    • the name of the conference
    • dates of the conference
    • mandatory activities that will be missed
    • website link to the conference
    • total financial support needed and brief explanation of what it will be used for.
  4. Include a brief statement (maximum 150 words) explaining your learning objectives and how attendance at this conference relates to the GSP mission.
  5. Requests will be reviewed and approved by the GSP Director and in consultation with faculty and staff as needed.
