Application Process

Deadline for admission is April 1st

All students accepted to the University of Virginia School of Medicine with an interest in pursuing a residency in family medicine, general internal medicine or general pediatrics are eligible to apply. Applicants must apply for the Generalist Scholars Program by April 1st prior to the student's first academic year in the School of Medicine. Acceptance into the program is competitive.

If you are interested in being considered for acceptance this year, please submit a letter of intent (email attachments accepted) of 1-3 pages outlining your interest in the program and your thoughts about a potential career in primary care to:

Ms. Dela Alexander
c/o Generalist Scholars Program
Box 800380 HSC
UVA School of Medicine
Charlottesville, VA 22908

email: da7r@virginia.edu

Upon receipt of your letter, the GSP faculty will review it along with your medical school application. A personal interview is not required as part of the application process. If, however, you are interested in speaking with one of our faculty and or current students to learn more about the program we are pleased to try and arrange a time to meet on campus.

Final selections and notification of acceptance in the program will be completed by late April. Please know that participation in the summer orientation component of the program is required for admission.

Financial Assistance

Generalist Scholars will be offered up to $10,000 per year non-need based Lawson Generalist Loan. The Lawson Generalist Loan is interest-free during the in-school period and will be applied directly toward payment of tuition and fees. If a student successfully completes the Generalist Scholars Program, graduates from the School of Medicine and matches in a primary care residency, the $10,000 per year Lawson Generalist Loan will be forgiven.
