Welcome to the University of Virginia School of Medicine Office of Diversity
Message from Michael Moxley, MD
I’m Michael Moxley, Associate Dean of Diversity and Medical Education. At the University of Virginia we are committed to academic excellence and recognize that understanding differences is essential to culturally competent education and health care. As our country becomes more diverse, and health care disparities persist we need to ensure that the health care workforce that we train is prepared to lead, live and work effectively in such an environment.
With the support of the Dean’s Office and the University president, we strive for cultural competence in our learners, staff, and faculty through curricular initiatives and a commitment to holistic approaches to recruiting, pipeline, admissions and hiring processes. We review our efforts and activities continuously and partner with other schools in the University to share our successes and opportunities for improvement. We invite you to explore our website and encourage you to contact us directly for further information. We look forward to hearing from you.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine
The University of Virginia has achieved an international reputation through comprehensive programs, expanding and pace-setting research and ability to attract leading scholars to its faculty. With the second highest endowment of any state-affiliated university in the United States, the University has comprehensive and multidisciplinary programs that are continuously advancing consistent with the vision of its founder, Thomas Jefferson.
The rural ambiance of central Virginia combined with the diversified
and cosmopolitan communities surrounding the University offer a
pleasant life style. With Washington DC 110 miles to the north and
Richmond 70 miles to the east, there is easy access not only to major
northeastern and southern cities but also to the beautiful Atlantic
beaches and Blue Ridge mountains.
Integral to the University of Virginia is its School of Medicine with
more than 1,000 medical and graduate
students mingling with nearly 700 residents and fellows, all supported
by 1,000 faculty plus nearly 900 volunteer clinicians members. Our
balanced program of teaching, research and patient care attracts over
four thousand applicants each year. Fifty-five percent of those
admitted are from Virginia. Clinical teaching is accomplished in the
nearly 600 bed University Medical Center, which is convenient to
classrooms and laboratories, and in rural and urban locations
throughout Virginia.
A collegial atmosphere encourages collaboration with the greater University. UVA Health System includes the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, University Medical Center, a level I trauma center, nationally recognized cancer and heart centers, and primary and specialty clinics throughout Central Virginia. UVA is annually recognized as a top-tier medical school by U.S. News & World Report.
