In this third meeting of the Working Group on Clinical Skills Education, discussion focused primarily upon the issue of defining the set of clinical skills which all students at UVA should be expected to learn during their 4 year curricular experience and a strategy for accomplishing this task. The following represents a tentative plan:

  1. Utilize the set of clinical skills contained in the AAMC national consensus recommendations as the template for undergraduate medical education;
  2. Identify through constituent discussion and survey what skills are currently being taught throughout our curriculum, how often students have the opportunity to learn and practice them, the educational methods being used for teaching and learning, and whether or not these skills are being assessed and how.
  3. Utilize these findings to create recommendations for enhancing clinical skills education in the curriculum.

The attached document is a draft of the kind of information that the Working Group seeks in its effort to better define the content of clinical skills education at UVA. In designing the implementation of this information-seeking effort, it is agreed that given the number of skills to be queried about (the AAMC document contains about 450 skills organized into the following categories: communication, physical examination, clinical testing, basic procedures) that this best be undertaken in small increments over a period of 6 - 12 months. It is the consensus of the WG that it is mandatory that we have this information in hand in order to make appropriate decisions regarding students' clinical skill development.

Finally, at its' next meeting, the WG will finalize the survey instrument and implementation strategy, and review preliminary results of the initial clinical skills education survey.
