- Vacant Curriculum Committee seat. A preliminary list of
candidates to fill the open position on the Curriculum Committee was
discussed. Don Innes will begin contacting the proposed candidates and
report back to the Committee.
- PoM-1 & PoM-2. PoM-1 Directors, John Gazewood and Eve
Bargman will be invited to next week's Curriculum Committee meeting to
discuss how the progress of the course thus far and their plans for the
future. PoM-2 (former ICM course) Director and Coordinator, Brian
Wispelwey and Darci Lieb will be invited to discuss necessary
modifications in their course to achieve a better connection to PoM-1.
ICM is an excellent course but more patient physical examination and
interview skills should be incorporated to continue the progress made
in PoM-1. The Committee thought that what is taught in the "Transition
Course" taken prior to third year, should be expanded and incorporated
into PoM-2. The Committee would like to see a blend of "paper" cases
and real patient involvement on a regular ongoing basis. It was
suggested that PoM-2 could also be improved using audiovisual aids much
as PoM-1 has done. See WEB site: http://hsc.virginia.edu/med-ed/pom/
Time allocation and course content for both the first and second year
POoM courses was discussed briefly and will be revisited after meeting
with Drs. Gazewood, Bargman and Wispelwey next week.
The Committee recommends that a PoM-2 Working Group be established to
design the transition and modify the courses as needed.
- Educational Space - Talks continue on the Medical School
acquisition of one floor of the Genesis Building (Towers) to be
designated for medical student small group teaching space. Planning
dollars for a new building dedicated to medical education will be
requested from the State in the next budget submission according to the
Dean.
- Curriculum Information Sheet. Don Innes distributed a
preliminary Curriculum Information sheet to the Committee. This
information sheet will be expanded and used to respond to inquiries on
course hours, what is taught, in what course topics are covered, etc.
Committee member input is requested.
