- 2000-01 Proposed schedule 2000-01 for Year 1. First year
spring and fall course directors met last week to finalize the 2000-01
proposed schedule. The Fall schedule allows for 5 mornings each week of
class time with one afternoon for Anatomy and one for the Practice of
Medicine course. The Spring semester consists of five mornings and one
afternoon for the Practice of Medicine course. Many topics have been
successfully integrated between courses. Further integration will be
encouraged as the courses progress. Conflicts with the MSTP schedule
have been largely eliminated or at least reduced to an acceptable
level. The graduate biochemistry course is not optimally situated
(Monday at 8 am) but several options exist for better placement. The
biochemistry faculty have been helpful in working toward a palatable
conclusion. We hope to have resolution within the week. Second year
course directors will meet 3/21/00 to work on their schedule.
- Practice of Medicine Leadership. It was formally announced
that Steve Meixel would be leaving UVA for an opportunity in Oklahoma.
His contributions to medical education at UVA were many and he will be
sorely missed. Steve's marvelous work and leadership on the Practice of
Medicine course is such that his vision and goals for the course are
certain to be accomplished. Don Innes has met with the Chairs of Family
Medicine and the Chief of General Medicine and Geriatrics, enlisting
their help in selection and recruitment of a Director for the Practice
of Medicine Course.
- Medical Student Recruitment. Subinoy Das reported that on a
national WEB site for prospective and current medical students, it was
noted in a positive manner that UVA School of Medicine is now making
revisions to its curriculum.
- Course and Faculty Evaluation. Members of the Curriculum
Committee are invited to attend the Committee on Computers in Medical
Education meeting on Tuesday, March 14, 12:30 pm in the ITC-HS
Conference Room on the third floor of Hospital West. Logistics of
online course and faculty evaluations will be discussed. It may be
possible for the software to withhold individual grades until
evaluation forms have been completed. While this would not maintain the
total anonymity we have now, faculty would not have access to student
names in relation to their comments. Evaluation recommendations might
be placed on the WEB for students.
Bob Bloodgood reported that a faculty member from the University of
South Carolina School of Medicine, which has online exams, is now
acting as a consultant for other schools who are interested in this
method. Security is the major concern in the use of online
examinations.
- Practice of Medicine Draft Description. Steve Meixel
distributed a draft of the description of the Practice of Medicine
course. The Curriculum Committee offered suggestions for minor
improvements and a final draft will be prepared and returned to the
Committee.
