Discussion of Mid Clerkship Evaluation
a. Neurology is giving weekly quizzes and a test at the end of the 4 weeks related to the learning objectives, these are proctored, review session 3 days before quiz is offered i.
Students have expressed concern about time to study for SHELF exam ii.
Questions have been reviewed by Jim Martindale, plan is to increase the Blooms level iii.
Each quiz is 10% of the grade, this has resulted in a wider spread of grade iv.
Test at end of clerkship is open source, 26 questions v.
Students via SMEC representatives have brought forward concerns that grading is not consistent for all members of the class of 2014, also length of time to complete the final test is a student concern (6 hours for the 26 questions b. Casey White and Jim Martindale will attend the August 27th meeting of this committee to discuss this topic as all clerkships are expected to have this in place by March 2013

Report from Coordinators Meeting
a. Proposed changes in clerkship lengths discussed with them on July5th b. Coordinators have access to new report in OASIS that can identify faculty with outstanding clerkship requirement (passport items) c. Coordinators monitor student completion of passport items at least weekly. They email them if they are behind/delinquent on a lot of items. d. Coordinators send reminder to students to complete items early in week of examination e. On day of examination i.
If student has not completed their part of clerkships requirement they are not allowed to take the examination and the grade is incomplete ii.
If student has done their part and the deficiencies are related to faculty/resident sign off then they student may take the examination, the grade is incomplete until the sign off is complete. f. Smart phone app is still not available per John Jackson

Continued concerns about professionalism were raised
a. Examples cited were students asking for sign off of requirements when faculty had offered to observe and students did not take advantage of the office b. Continued concern about how prepared the cohort of students in class of 2014 is for presentation, assessment and plan

Clerkship Changes: curriculum committee approved the plan presented by Dr. Innes
a. 4 twelve week blocks i.
6 weeks OB/6 weeks Peds with overlap during labor and deliver and NBN ii.
4 weeks FM, 4 weeks neurology, 4 weeks psychiatry iii.
Surgery block: 6 weeks general surgery, 2 two week specialty surgery rotations, 2 weeks peri-operative medicine iv.
Medicine: 6 weeks inpatient internal medicine, 3 weeks AIM, 3 weeks Acute care medicine v.
Geriatrics 2 weeks will be required in the 4th year b. The following concerns were raised i.
Internal Medicine: 6 weeks will be hard to schedule, continued concerns about quality of the rotation at Salem VA ii.
General Surgery: loss of 2 weeks of general surgery is difficult to replace for the students iii.
Pediatrics: 25% of the exposure to clinical care of children is significant considering the lack of exposure in other parts of the curriculum c. No decision has been made about the requirements for 4th year of curriculum, ACE is expected to continue and all students will need to take 2 weeks of Geriatric
d. Financial implication to departments are being evaluated

Other business
a. Rotations at Roanoke were discussed, no decision has been made about Pediatrics, Surgery, Medicine or Psychiatry b. Rotations at Salem VA also discussed. They may be able to take one additional student at Salem on the Psychiatry clerkship. c. Medical Student documentation i.
Practice is not consistent as to faculty reading student notes, in general they are not signed and cannot be used for documentation or legal purposes ii.
Need a high level agreement with SOM and MC with regards to these notes d. Identifiction of clerkshp teaching activities – list
