More Than Science
A student talks about a lesson
I sat in the auditorium listening to the speaker describe her experiences as a transplant surgeon. She talked about breaking a promise to someone on the brink of death. This surgeon, as fallible as anyone listening to her that day, confessed her failure as an advocate. Her distress and sense of defeat helped me begin to understand what being a doctor means. I could imagine, almost, the responsibility of caring for another life. I felt both excited and terrified.
