The UVa Global Health Case Competition
fosters a unique opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students
from multiple schools and disciplines to promote awareness of and
develop innovative solutions for current, critical global health
issues. Top prize for the UVa case conference competition team is
$1200. The Center for Global Health will additionally be supporting a
team for the Emory competition where a top prize of $6000 is
awarded.
The case this year asks students to tackle the issues of totally drug
resistant tuberculosis and urban poverty in the Mumbai slum of Dharavi.
To successfully address the case, all manner of issues must be
considered and skills incorporated – from budgeting and cost-benefits
analyses to consideration of traditional religious mores or ethnic
tensions in a society. In just one week, student teams will have to
disentangle complex problems, reflect and synthesize findings,
acknowledge limitations, and occasionally negotiate opposing viewpoints
to create an evidence-based, innovative set of recommendations that
they then present to judges on competition day this Saturday. At the
competition’s conclusion, a winning team is chosen, but more
importantly, new ideas and applications are generated for very real
public health problems, and students remain inspired and impassioned
global citizens.
