VCUG Voiding Cystourethrogram

VCUG Voiding Cystourethrogram

A VCUG study is a special x-ray of the bladder and urethra.  The studies are performed in the Radiology Department (1st floor, Hospital East- the big white building).  Sedation may be administered depending on the age of the child, following which a catheter or small tube is placed into the bladder.  Contract dye/fluid is then instilled into the bladder through the catheter and x-rays are taken.  At the end of the study the catheter is removed and additional images are obtained.

After the VCUG the child and his parents head over to the Pediatric Urology Clinic (2nd floor, Private Clinics, Hospital West) where they will meet with the physician.

When you come to the Urology Department after the VCUG, please bring some of the urine collected in Radiology with you.  We will send it to be cultured.  You should also bring with you the x-ray films for the Doctor to review and discuss with you.

If you have any concerns please call 434-942-2224.
