A Message from Dr. William D. Steers, Chairman
At the University of Virginia Department of Urology, our Physicians develop new and effective treatments for a wide range of Urologic Conditions. We have specialized programs in male sexual health, which include evaluation and management of erectile dysfunction, microsurgical reconstruction, fertility, and sperm recovery. We are also a leading institution in the treatment of renal stones with several kidney machines and laser technologies for fragmenting stones. We run an extensive program in Female Urology and Urinary Incontinence using a multidisciplinary approach in collaboration with a Urogynecologist and Behaviorist. Our team uses a wide range of approaches for bladder problems ranging from behavioral therapy and drugs to minimally invasive surgery.
The Pediatric Program in the Department of Urology cares for a wide range of patients and is spearheaded by Fellowship-Trained Pediatric Urologists with the assistance of a Nurse Practitioner.
Urologic Oncology places a special emphasis on cancers of the bladder, prostate, and kidney. Our cancer surgeons have pioneered minimally invasive therapies including Cryosurgery, Brachytherapy, and Robotic Prostatectomy for prostate cancer as well as Robotic Cystectomy for bladder cancer. With regard to preservation of renal function, laparoscopic nephrectomies as well as cryosurgery have been employed in our department to treat benign and malignant kidney tumors. Treatment of benign prostatic disorders using minimally invasive therapies as well as drugs is also utilized by our urologists.
