Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

 Upchurch    From the Chief

Gilbert R. Upchurch, M.D.

Professor of Surgery

Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery

Welcome. The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Virginia provides cutting edge care to patients with vascular disease. Our hope is to deliver excellent, compassionate, and timely care to every patient every day with vascular disease. We pledge to provide the highest quality care based on clinical standards rooted in applied research and outcomes, while maintaining respect for our patients and their families.  In doing this, we hope to elevate the care of patients with vascular disease while making this Division one of the best in the country.

We have tremendous and broad experience in managing vascular problems ranging from the most common to the rare and complex. Our doctors are among the best in the country.  State-of-the art techniques of vascular surgery offered include angioplasty, intra-arterial stents, minimally invasive surgery, and fenestrated endografting. We perform over 900 major vascular operations a year.

In addition, we are actively in the process of creating an interactive Vascular Center. Our goal is for patients with vascular disease to come to the University of Virginia and have all of their studies and tests completed, as well as, see their care providers in a single visit. Through the Center, we will develop multidisciplinary, multispecialty teams, such as cardiovascular medicine and interventional radiology, that are brought together in a single location to make the overall patient experience more enjoyable. Patients can choose to get vascular studies and be seen by physicians in our new facility at Zion’s Crossroads or Northridge, if they wish.  In addition, our vascular surgeons see patients at our outreach clinics 1 to 2 days a month in Fishersville, Hot Springs, Lexington, Zion’s Crossroads, and Culpeper, Virginia, as well as, Lewisburg, West Virginia.

From an institutional standpoint, we are witnessing a time of renewed interest and commitment to treating patients with vascular disease.  We are one of two centers in State of Virginia that has performed fenestrated endovascular grafts for abdominal aortic aneurysms.  We are one of the few centers in the country that treats vascular related sports injuries to high performance athletes, including external iliac arteriopathies. Our vein center will be expanding in the spring for medically necessary procedures and cosmetic treatment of varicose veins.  We will also be offering vascular screenings at our Northridge facility to evaluate for carotid atherosclerosis, lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).  In the summer of 2014, our new state of the art endovascular suite will be available to continue to perform hybrid procedures. Furthermore, we are working on plans to open a vascular wound clinic in the near future. We are excited about our new offerings and look forward to serving our vascular population in the State of Virginia, as well as, nationally.

Because we are here for you, twenty-four hour consultation is available for urgent or emergency cases. Consultation after 5:00 pm weekdays or on weekends can be initiated through the Vascular Surgery Fellow by calling the hospital page operator at 434-924-0000

Best Wishes,
