Letter From Program Director
Letter from Dr. Bruce Schirmer, Residency Program Director
Dear General Surgery Applicant,
Welcome to the University of Virginia General Surgery Residency Program!
I am delighted that you have chosen to pursue the excellent training opportunities that we provide. UVA Surgery has a long and distinguished national reputation as a premier academic training program. Superior clinical training coupled with top-notch research defines our academic tradition. Our residents annually publish close to 50 peer-reviewed papers and receive institutional and national recognition for their research, medical student teaching, and mentorship. Accordingly, our graduates are consistently accepted into the fellowship training programs of their choice. Special features of our program include a uniformly high performance of operations by residents, emphasis on resident empowerment, and an enthusiastic esprit de corps by the residents.
The UVA Department of Surgery faculty, led by our current Chairman, Irving L. Kron, M.D., epitomize academic surgical leadership. Only four individuals have held the chairmanship of our Department during the last century, including two previous Presidents of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Kron, a past president of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, is Chair of the Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery. Bradley M. Rodgers, M.D., is past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Surgeons. John B. Hanks, M.D., is past president of the Southeastern Surgical Association, Dr. Reid Adams is past president of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA), Dr. Robert Sawyer is current president of the Surgical Infection Society, and I am a past president of SAGES, the AHPBA, the Society of Clinical Surgeons and president of the Fellowship Council. Drs. Kron, Rodgers, Hanks, and I have also been or are Directors of the American Board of Surgery, and Dr. Rodgers served on the Residency Review Committee for Surgery. One of our 2012 graduating Chief Residents, Paris Butler, was also a member of the RRC for Surgery.
At UVA, we are dedicated to continuing our pursuit of excellence in clinical surgery, teaching, and surgical research. We hope that you will consider applying to our program and joining us in this mission.
