Cindy Wagner, MD

Cindy Wagner, MD
Surgery Resident, University of Virginia

Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: cel2v@virginia.edu

Mentor: Irv Kron & Vic Laubach

Research Project: Cindy is studying the rehabilitation of non-heart beating donor lungs (pig and human) via ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) and adenosine A2A receptor agonist. She is also using a mouse model to determine the role of innate immune cells and to evalate the potential of ultrasound to attenuate lung ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Jake_Gillen

Jake Gillen, MD
Surgery Resident, University of Virginia

Phone: 434-924-5836
Email: jacob.gillen@gmail.com

Mentor: Christine Lau, MD

Research Project: Jake is working in the laboratory of Chris Lau studying the protective effects of mesenchymal stem cells on bronchiolitis obliterans using a muring trachea transplant model.
Nick Pope

Nicolas (Nick) Pope, MD
Surgery Resident, University of Virginia

Phone: 434-924-9297
Email: nps4f@virginia.edu

Mentor: Gilbert Upchurch, MD

Research Project: Nick is primarily working in the laboratory of Dr. Upchurch, studying the contribution of vascular smooth muscle cell-derived macrophages to inflammation in abdominal aortic aneurysm formation. Nick is also working with Drs. Kron and Laubach, helping with the pig model of lung ischemia-reperfusion injury, EVLP and transplant.
Matt Stone, MD

Matt Stone, MD
Surgery Resident, University of Virginia

Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: mstone@virginia.edu

Mentor:  Victor Laubach, PhD

Research Project: Matt is working on several projects in the lab. One focus is on the role of pulmonary dendritic cells and IL-23/IL-12 in T cell activation during lung ischemia-reperfusion injury. Another focus is on the rehabilitation of donor lungs via EVLP (ex vivo lung perfusion). Matt is also a PhD candidate in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics.

Ashish Sharma, MBBS, PhD
Assistant Professor of Research

Phone: 434-982-3711
Email: aks2n@virginia.edu

Mentor:  Victor Laubach, PhD

Research Project: Ashish is working in Victor Laubach's lab studying the role of T cells, IL-17, RAGE and NADPH oxidase in pulmonary IR injury utilizing in vitro primary cell culture and an in vivo mouse lung model of lung IR. Ashish is also conducting research on the ability of stem cell therapy to prevent lung IR injury.
