Sandra G. Burks
Associate Director, Surgical Therapeutic Advancement Center
Sandra Burks received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She later went on to serve as Staff and Charge Nurse in the Coronary Care Unit at Duke University Medical Center, where she was responsible for training and supervising a nursing team involved in the care of critically ill cardiac patients. Ms. Burks subsequently served as Clinical Research Nurse in a multi-site study sponsored by the National Institute of Health at Duke University Medical Center. Ms. Burks returned to UVA in 1991, where she joined the Thoracic Cardio Vascular Post Operative Unit as a Clinician III, functioning as Charge Nurse and Orientation Facilitator in charge of training new staff and nursing students. She joined the Tissue Adhesive Center (TAC) as Clinical Coordinator in 1997, and has been responsible for protocol development, patient enrollment and consent, data collection and maintenance, and overall quality assurance in all of the Center's past and ongoing clinical trials. As Associate Director of TAC, Ms. Burks served as the project manager for the development of the many areas of interest for the Center, overseeing administrative functions, coordinating research efforts, assisting in publication preparation, and organizing educational conferences sponsored by the Center. Currently she serves as the new Associate Director for the Surgical Therapeutic Advancement Center (STAC) at the University of Virginia. In this role, she is responsible for oversight and coordination of the expanded research interests impacting surgical patients and related clinical fields within the University.
