Focused Ultrasound at UVA School of Medicine
Bringing a new frontier of scalpel-free surgery to the Central Virginia community.
Mission: To develop Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) technology to its highest potential in a collaborative, interdepartmental manner, regardless of what existing technologies are disrupted.
The UVA Focused Ultrasound Center is the flagship focused ultrasound center in the United States. The Center is one-of-a-kind for its dedicated MR machine and is one of two centers worldwide with low and high frequency head and body units.
MRgFUS is FDA-approved for the treatment of uterine fibroids. Through clinical trials and research hosted at the Center, we will expand the knowledge of focused ultrasound and its role in non-invasive treatment options.
We are excited to bring this Center to UVa under the cross-departmental leadership of Dr. James Larner, MD (Dept of Radiation Oncology), Dr. Alan Matsumoto, MD (Dept. of Radiology), and Dr. Jason Sheehan, MD, PhD (Dept. of Neurosurgery).
