Leave Policies

Leave Policies

Vacation
Residents will have 20 days of vacation/leave and 14 days  for illness per year as outlined by the ABR guidelines. Residents who are ill must followed the procedure outlined under sick leave.

Paternity Leave
Residents will be given one week (5 working days) of paternity leave at the time of delivery.

Maternity Leave
Residents will be given four weeks (20 working days) maternity leave at the time of the delivery per UVA GME policy: Maternity leave may be granted as four weeks exceptional leave ([two weeks sick leave plus any remaining annual vacation time].  The total leave period must be approved by the department chair who will communicate this to the Medical Staff and Residency Office.)

Interview Leave
All fourth year residents will go to ASTRO at the expense of the residency.  This is a good opportunity for residents to conduct job interviews. Fourth year residents should consider the need to utilize vacation time for interview purposes.

Sick Leave

When a sick day is needed, the resident must inform the following by email: Dr. Showalter; the Residency Coordinator; and the secretary in charge of contacting the UVA Call Operator.  If you know you will be out for an extended timeframe, include this infomation in the email.

Academic Leave for Conferences and Boards
Residents attending academic conferences and teaching seminars or taking their written boards do not have to use vacation days for these activities.

Moonlighting Policy

Moonlighting is not allowed during the first year of residency.  After the first year, moonlighting will be allowed as defined by the GME Policy #11.
