Residents will have 20 days of vacation/leave and 14
days for illness per year as outlined by the ABR guidelines.
Residents who are ill must followed the procedure outlined under sick
Residents will be given one week (5 working days) of
paternity leave at the time of delivery.
Residents will be given four weeks (20 working days)
maternity leave at the time of the delivery per UVA GME policy:
Maternity leave may be granted as four weeks exceptional leave ([two
weeks sick leave plus any remaining annual vacation time]. The
total leave period must be approved by the department chair who will
communicate this to the Medical Staff and Residency Office.)
All fourth year residents will go to ASTRO at the expense of the
residency. This is a good opportunity for residents to conduct
job interviews. Fourth year residents should consider the need to
utilize vacation time for interview purposes.
When a sick day is needed, the resident must inform the following by
email: Dr. Showalter; the Residency Coordinator; and the secretary
in charge of contacting the UVA Call Operator. If you know you
will be out for an extended timeframe, include this infomation in the
Academic Leave for Conferences and Boards
Residents attending academic conferences and teaching seminars or
taking their written boards do not have to use vacation days for these
Moonlighting is not allowed during the first year of
residency. After the first year, moonlighting will be allowed as
defined by the GME Policy #11.
