Mission

The Mission of the Division of Diagnostic Medical Physics is to assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care. The Medical Physics Division performs, educates, or supervises the pertinent procedures necessary to achieve this objective. This objective is met at a minimum through the performance testing and monitoring of radiation producing equipment for adherence to applicable state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the diagnostic medical physicist:

1. Protection of the patient and others from potentially harmful or excessive radiation
2. Establishment of adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry
3. The measurement and characterization of radiation
4. The determination of delivered dose
5. Advancement of procedures necessary to ensure image quality
6. Development and direction of quality assurance programs
7. Assistance to other health care professionals in optimizing the balance between the beneficial and deleterious effects of radiation
8. Education of both attendings and residents on the safe use and science of medical imaging

Human Investigations Involving Radiation (HIRE) Committee

Use of ionizing radiation in human research in any manner that does not directly benefit the patient/subject (i.e. beyond standard of care) must be approved by the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC), specifically the Human Investigations Involving Radiation Exposure (HIRE) subcommittee. The HIRE committee is made up of medical physicists, health physicists, and practicing physicians.
