Course Overview

This course is designed to acquaint the medical student with the modalities and broad field of Diagnostic Radiology with general objectives to:

• Enhance learning and understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology through imaging
• Acquire the knowledge of the language of Radiology and interpretation of the Radiology report
• Prepare the physician in training to efficiently use the resources of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine in patient care and enable the understanding of what the next best study is for specific clinical presentations and associated symptoms
• Be able to recognize common pathologic states with different imaging modalities
• Learn to quickly recognize unexpected critical and sometimes life threatening findings from imaging studies on the specific focused area

Four-Week Course

The four-week course consists of a series of one-week rotations through the department. These include three weeks of six core curriculum rotations and one week of elective time where the student can focus on his or her career interests.

There will also be a series of medical student dedicated lectures and tutorials given by Radiology faculty, fellows, and residents. Additional time will be devoted to self-study of images, slide-and web-based interactive learning modules, which have been prepared as teaching materials.

Each student will prepare a teaching case to present to his/her colleagues and the course director that will then be placed in the student radiology teaching file ( case examples). All students are encouraged to participate in department activities including numerous case based and didactic conferences, seminars, grand rounds and other activities. Grading of an interactive computer generated examination and course are pass/fail.

Two-Week Course

The arranged two-week rotation consists of a focused elective where the student can choose up to two areas where he/she would like exposure in radiology based on their future career plans. These focused areas include but are not limited to: Chest, Musculoskeletal, Pediatrics, GI/GU, Body CT, Ultrasound, Mammography and Neuroradiology. The objectives in this focused rotation include:
