Ideal placement of Deep brain stimulator (DBS) leads is within the
Globus Pallidus Externus (GPe) and Globu Pallidus Internus (GPi).
Currently, positioning is assessed intraoperatively by placing the lead
into the region of Globus Pallidus (GP) and increasing the voltage.
Facial twitching is observed for response to determine proximity to the
internal capsule thereby indicating position within the GP.
The goal of my research project is to show that Diffusion Tensor
Imaging with tractography can be used to map the ideal location for
Deep Brain Stimulator lead placement for pre operative surgical
planning. This will hopefully result in decreased operative times and
improved clinical results for patients receiving Deep Brain Stimulators
such as those with Parkinson's disease.
