Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by
seizures. Medication exists as a palliative treatment for many
individuals; however, the treatments may not be effective for all
individuals and breakthrough seizures may still occur. Surgery is an
option where the focal abnormality causing epilepsy can be located and
removed with the goal of total control of epileptic seizures.
Large abnormalities are relatively easy to detect; while smaller
abnormalities in the cortical grey matter are less well understood and
more difficult to detect. Improved understanding and detection of these
focal abnormalities through use of MRI, a part of the routine
neurological examination used in diagnosis of epilepsy, may led to more
precise surgeries or more profound effect.
