The Department of Plastic Surgery consists of seven active
practitioners. All aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery are
performed. All physicians are board certified by the American Board of
Plastic Surgery. At present, we are able to evaluate and manage
patients at the University of Virginia Hospital, Martha Jefferson
Hospital, Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA, and at
UVa/HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlottesville. Inquiries
may be directed as follows:
- Clinic Appointments: (434) 924-5078
- Administration: (434) 924-5030
- Patient Accounts/Billing (434) 924-8120
This clinic focuses on the comprehensive care of the patient
seeking cosmetic surgery. A comprehensive treatment program is
available to all patients that includes facial aesthetic surgery such
as facelifts and collagen or fat injections, body contouring with
traditional and ultrasonic liposuction, use of lasers, and
many reconstructive procedures.
Comprehensive information on how these procedures are
performed, the risks involved, whether a person is a good candidate for
a particular procedure, and what one can expect before, during,
and after surgery, can be found by following the link below to our
patient education page concerning aesthetic and reconstructive
surgery.

The Chief
Residents' Clinic
This clinic offers patients quality service and care at a
significantly reduced rate. When a patient elects to have a resident as
his/her primary surgeon, 40% or more of the surgeon's fee is often
waived. More importantly, the operation is done under the guidance of a
faculty physician, who is present to teach and
assist throughout the procedure. The faculty
physician is also involved in preoperative visits and
postoperative care. The full spectrum of plastic surgery is offered
through the Chief Residents' Clinic, including aesthetic surgery and
procedures.
Plastic surgery residents are physicians who have completed
prerequisite training in general surgery or related fields and have
elected to continue training in plastic surgery. During the plastic
surgery residency, the knowledge and skills to perform various
reconstructive and cosmetic procedures are imparted to the resident.
All instruction is done by board-certified plastic surgeons, most of
whom have additional training in highly specific areas of plastic
surgery.
For more information or to schedule an appointment to be seen at the
Chief Residents' Clinic, please contact Linda Koch at (434) 924-8120 or lsk7p@virginia.edu .
Craniofacial Clinic
The Craniofacial Clinic is held weekly by the four physicians
and pediatric nurse coordinator who comprise the Division of
Craniofacial Surgery. This multidisciplinary clinic offers our patients
optimal care by consulting with the Departments of Neurosurgery,
Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, and
Anesthesiology, as well as with genetics and speech pathology
specialists. To further enhance our patient care, we have developed a
new cleft palate speech laboratory, new and improved imaging of the
skull for surgery planning and post-surgery assessment, and new
techniques to assess the outcome of our treatments. Appointments for
this clinic may be made by calling (434) 924-2528.
The DeCamp Burn
& Wound Healing Center
The DeCamp Burn & Wound Healing Center is a 6-bed extension of
the Surgical Intensive Care Unit on the 5th floor of the University
Hospital. The Center is composed of a multidisciplinary staff engaged
in treating acute thermal, chemical, and electrical burn injuries. The
Center is also dedicated to the treatment and management of complex
wounds, both acute and chronic. The focus is on the thorough
physiologic and psychosocial rehabilitation of the patient across the
care continuum. Further inquiries may be addressed to the medical
director,
Dr. David Drake,
at (434) 924-2123, or the Center directly at (434) 924-BURN (2876).
The Burn Support Laboratory
The Burn Support Laboratory is staffed by members of the Wound
Healing Laboratory. Presently, we bank harvested autografts, prepare a
topical antimicrobial cream extensively used in the DeCamp Burn &
Wound Healing Center and in the Chronic Wound Care Clinic, and perform
quantitative bacteriology on clinical biopsies. For further
information, call the Burn Support Laboratory at (434) 924-2126.
The Chronic Wound Care Clinic (CWCC)
The goal of the Chronic Wound Care Clinic since its beginning has
been to coordinate all aspects of patient evaluations regarding their
wounds within a single clinic. To accomplish this goal, the CWCC has
organized a multidisciplinary team of plastic surgeons, wound-care
specialists, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, and
specialists in rehabilitative medicine, prosthetic and orthotic
services, and home health services. Additionally, the CWCC consults
frequently with many other departments at the University of Virginia
Health System and uses the newest technology and scientific advances to
enhance the care provided to our patients. These advances include
digital photography to monitor the size and status of each wound,
growth-factor therapy to stimulate healing, skin oxygen level
measurement to assess the health of the skin and underlying tissue, and
hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A web page devoted to our CWCC can be seen
by clicking

The Hyperbaric
Oxygen Treatment Center
The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center offers two state-of-the-art
services to both inpatients and outpatients at the University:
hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and transcutaneous oximetry (often
referred to as TCOM). TCOM is a noninvasive way of measuring oxygen
tension in the body tissues. HBO therapy is a way of delivering great
amounts of oxygen to the body tissues by breathing 100% oxygen in a
chamber that has been pressurized to more than atmospheric pressure.
HBO has been proven to be beneficial for patients diagnosed with the
following conditions:
- chronic wounds
- compromised skin grafts or flaps
- necrotizing soft tissue infection
- gas gangrene
- osteomyelitis
- carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning
- decompression sickness
- air or gas embolism
- crush injuries
- radiation tissue damage
For more information or to schedule a patient for a consultation,
please call the Hyperbaric Oxygen Service at (434) 982-3999.
The Preventive Foot Care Clinic
The Preventive Foot Care Clinic is an expansion of services offered
by Catherine Ratliff, PhD, RN of the Chronic Wound Care Clinic. The
purpose of the clinic is to provide care for foot wounds and toenails,
give advice on proper footwear, and generally focus on wound prevention
in patients at risk for developing foot wounds. In addition to this
clinic's success in our hospital, Dr. Ratliff has developed a
successful program with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) to
provide service and education on foot care to the elderly population
and their care providers in our community. For more information, or to
make an appointment, contact the Chronic Wound Care Clinic at (434)
982-2922 (982-CWCC).
The Oral &
Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic
This clinic offers a full range of oral & maxillofacial surgical
services. Dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom teeth, preprosthetic and
implant surgery) can be performed on-site using the latest techniques
in intravenous sedation and pain control. Consultative services are
also available for the surgical treatment of congenital and
developmental jaw anomalies, jaw reconstruction, facial trauma, oral
and jaw tumors, corrective and cosmetic jaw surgery and other
related concerns. The clinic is directed by
Martin A. Hoard, DDS, MD. Call (434) 924-5301 for inquiries or
