PM&R Program Therapeutic Recreation Rotation  – Anna King, CTRS; Laurie Sewell, CTRS; Joy Button, CTRS; -KCRC
This rotation provides PM&R residents with the opportunity to work with recreation therapists at the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center and participate in the provision of recreational therapy. Therapeutic recreation services contribute to the broad spectrum of health care through treatment (recreational therapy), education, and the provision of adapted recreational opportunities, all of which are instrumental to improving and maintaining physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning, preventing secondary health conditions, enhancing independent living skills and the overall quality of life.

A recreational therapist works with the client, their family members and others significant to the improvement of the disabled person’s health condition. Recreational therapists assist clients to develop skills, knowledge and behaviors for daily living and community involvement. The goal of recreational therapy is to restore, remediate or rehabilitate in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. The opportunity to positively impact the quality of life of an individual with a disability or limitation is extremely rewarding.
