PM&R Residency Program Outpatient Electives
The goal of this rotation is to enable the PM&R resident to pursue his/her outpatient clinical interests in a broad range of areas related to the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Each 4th year resident has three months of elective time. These electives may be taken within or outside of the department. The resident must submit a letter stating what he or she will be doing for each month, and who the sponsor of the elective will be. The letter is to be submitted to the residency coordinator, who will forward it to the PM&R GME Committee for approval. This letter must be submitted at least two weeks before the elective begins. A resident must secure PM&R GME Committee approval for each elective.
If the area the resident wishes to pursue is not available as an elective at the University of Virginia , a one-month elective away from the UVa campus may be arranged. The University of Virginia Health System will provide salary and benefits (including liability insurance coverage) for one one-month away rotation per resident per year. An application for an away elective must be submitted to the UVa GME Committee for approval at least one month before the elective is due to start. You must also supply the committee with a CV of the sponsoring physician, and a letter from the sponsor detailing the supervision of clinical and educational activities that the resident will receive.
(If approval for the away elective is not obtained and the resident proceeds with the elective, UVa malpractice insurance will not cover the resident, and he or she will not get paid.)
