Course Description:
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a patient-centered
holistic specialty. A patient-centered team approach is utilized to
improve a patient's mobility and function. The rehabilitation team
includes physical and occupational therapists, speech language
pathologists, physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, case managers
and nutritionists. Students on this rotation will work on the
PM&R Consultation Service at University Hospital. Students will
develop an understanding of therapy prescription, managing
complications of illnesses and injuries that can limit function, and
assess patients for inpatient rehabilitation. Arrangements can be made
to observe therapy sessions and rotate on the inpatient PM&R
service. A daily lecture series is held. There are no night,
weekend, or call responsibilities.
Goals:
-
To learn strategies to decrease complications of prolonged hospital stays such as joint contractures, pressure sores, and deconditioning.
-
To learn a non-invasive approach to treating back pain utilizing physical therapy and medications.
-
To become familiar with speech, physical and occupational therapy.
-
To begin to learn to assess inpatients and determine their rehabilitation needs.
