Acupuncture
is a Chinese medical practice, about 2,500 years old, in which needles
are inserted at predetermined points around the body. Often used as a
way of promoting health as well as fighting disease, the goal is to
bring about a change in the medical condition or a change in the body
itself. Many individuals with persistent pain find that treatment
options are often limited, particularly if they cannot tolerate
analgesics, such as aspirin, or other medications to relieve the pain.
In many of these situations, acupuncture may be a reasonable
alternative. Acupuncture, in fact, is particularly useful in decreasing
pain levels to the point where the patient can participate in a
physical therapy or exercise program, and return to a more active
