Department of Public Health Sciences
The Department of Public Health Sciences (formerly Health Evaluation Sciences) brings a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the generation, management and interpretation of basic science, clinical and health-related information.
We also support active teaching programs in Public Health and Clinical Research.
The Department of Public Health Sciences collaborates in cross-school and cross-university programs in Health Policy, Law, and Ethics. See: Health Policy, Law, & Ethics at UVA for more information.
In addition, we provide research collaboration and consulting support to School of Medicine faculty, departments and others.
The Department is composed of four major divisions:
- Biomedical Informatics: research and consulting
on the application of computing and communications technology to
biomedical research and health data. Biomedical Informatics manages the
UVa Clinical Data Repository in support of clinical research at
- Biostatistics: research and
consulting on the application of statistical analyses to biomedical
research data. Biostatistics and Epidemiology provides statistical
support for many research projects at UVa.
- Patient Outcomes, Policy & Epidemiologic Research: teaching, research and community interventions in public health practice and health care policy.
- Translational Research & Applied Statistics: provides the analytical infrastructure for basic, clinical, and translational research at the University of Virginia, specifically in cancer and in close collaboration with faculty and staff in the NCI-designated University of Virginia Cancer Center.
