Kristen Wells, Jennifer Mason join department
PHS welcomes its two newest faculty members, Kristen Wells and Jennifer Mason.
A native of Maryland, Kristen is no stranger to UVa, having arrived here five years ago an a career journey that took her to the University of Delaware (Agriculture), Emory University (MPH in Environmental & Occupational Health) and Virginia Commonwealth University (Ph.D., Epidemiology). She comes to us from the Department of Family Medicine where she worked closely with Norm Oliver.
Kristen is, or course, no stranger to PHS, either, where she has been teaching Epidemiology II for a while, to which this fall she has added Environmental Health Epidemiology. Her research interests involve the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and multilevel modeling to study the spatial distribution of disease and post treatment outcomes.
Jennifer, the newest member of the division of Biomedical Informatics, hails from Columbia, South Carolina and comes to us via the University of South Carolina where she received her Bachelor's in Mathematics and NC State where she earned her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering with a dissertation entitled "Optimal Treatment of Diabetes Patients using Markov Decision Processes and Approximate Dynamic Programming Methods." Jennifer plans to continue her research career by studying the treatment of patients with chronic diseases such as lupus and asthma.
Welcome, Kristen and Jennifer!
