Harrison Named Director of Clinical Informatics

James Harrison named Director

Division of Clinical Informatics

James Harrison, Jr., MD, PhD became the director for the Division of Clinical Informatics in the summer of 2005.   Dr. Harrison comes from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he serves as Associate Professor of Pathology, Associate Director of Pathology Informatics and a core faculty member of the Center for Biomedical Informatics.

Dr. Harrison, an active member of the American Medical Informatics Association, the Association for Pathology Informatics, and the College of American Pathologists, has research interests in the impact of data-driven displays on clinical decision-making, data warehousing and data mining, and medical informatics education.  Dr. Knaus, Chair of the Department, said, ”Dr. Harrison brings a diverse and impressive set of skills and experiences that will complement and strengthen our division. He will broaden the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences’ collaboration with other departments and centers at UVA. Already he has begun discussion and collaborations with UVA’s Cancer Center designed to bring UVA into a National Cancer Institute sponsored nationwide information sharing consortium”.

Dr Harrison will hold a secondary appointment in the Pathology Department. He anticipates innovative joint activities with the Cancer Center, the Health System’s Computer Services and Pharmacy, as well as the departments of Systems Engineering and Computer Sciences.
