Pediatric General Assembly Day

Pediatric General Assembly Day

We Need YOU at the next Pediatric General Assembly Day!

Who: All child advocates!

When: Thursday, January 27, 2011

Where: Commonwealth Park Hotel, Richmond, VA

How: Come to Richmond and learn everything you need to know about the child health issues under consideration in the General Assembly this session and how to meet with your legislators! The morning session culminates with visits in the General Assembly Building with your local representatives. The day concludes with a debriefing lunch back at the hotel.

Last year, over 50 child advocates, including pediatric residents representing all four residency programs in Virginia, attended General Assembly day. Participants were surprised to find that legislators are not aware of all pending legislation and that meeting with them can help focus them on pending child health issues. Participants were also impressed with the accessibility of the legislators and the genuine interest they showed in trying to understand the issues. This was the first visit with legislators for most of the participants; but after General Assembly Day, most planned to stay in touch with their legislators and continue to participate in the legislative process.

One participant summed it up: "I really feel like I made a difference today."

This event is a collaborative effort between
the Virginia Chapter AAP and the Medical Society of Virginia

It is hands-on legislative advocacy for new and experienced advocates!
