Life as a Resident
Residents and their families can expect a healthy work/life balance at UVA. We offer an excellent pediatric residency program in an environment that is friendly, safe and full of rich cultural opportunities.
Training is designed to provide an outstanding balance between general pediatrics and the pediatric subspecialties, including clinical and basic research. The result will give you confidence as a general practitioner as well as a strong background should you choose to pursue a specializiation or a career in academics.
While not on the clock, you’ll be glad to know that Charlottesville and Albemarle County provide the most relaxing settings you could imagine. From the gently rolling slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, to the casually cosmopolitan style of the Downtown Mall, you’re sure to find something to do that will bring a welcome balance to your day.
The learning environment at UVA is superb!
Frank Raucci, M.D., PGY-3
"I have been extremely satisfied with my choice of UVA as the place to do my pediatric training. The learning environment here has what I consider the perfect balance of academics, patient-centered care, and patient volume and acuity. We are encouraged early-on to take on the responsibility of developing care plans for our patients and are afforded the opportunity to investigate, discuss, and include the most recent evidence-based information in our treatment plans. The collegial environment makes me comfortable discussing all aspects of my patients' care with attending physicians and my fellow residents. Our exposure to world-class general pediatricians and subspecialists gives us the depth and breadth needed to be excellent pediatricians."
Charlottesville is a place where you can find great work-life balance. Amanda Jacobson, M.D., PGY-3
"Charlottesville is a wonderful place to have an exciting and fulfilling life outside of the hospital. I think it would be difficult to find anyone who does not think Charlottesville is one of the best places to live! With numerous wineries and breweries, eclectic shopping, fantastic music venues, beautiful weather and topography, and delicious restaurants, you can easily enjoy yourself throughout the year. Our residency is close-knit and many of us are very good friends outside the hospital. It is not unusual to find a big group of us cooking steaks and relaxing outdoors with a glass of wine on a weekend night."
