The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will be hosting Gerry F. Funk, MD, Gerry Funk, MDFACS as our visiting professor on October 25, 2012. 

Gerry F. Funk, MD, FACS has been the Director of the Division of Head and Neck Oncology within the Department of Otolaryngology since 2008 and is the Holden Cancer Center Head and Neck Oncology Professor. He is also the Director of the University of Iowa Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship accredited through the American Head and Neck Society.  

Dr. Funk was raised in Oregon and received his BS in Chemistry at the University of Oregon.  He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine with his MD in 1986.  His Otolaryngology residency was at Los Angeles County Hospital - University of Southern California. He came to the University of Iowa in 1991 for fellowship training in head and neck cancer and reconstructive surgery. He joined the Otolaryngology faculty as an assistant professor in 1992, was promoted to associate professor in 1997 and full professor in 2004.

While at the University of Oregon he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and during medical school to Alpha Omega Alpha. He received an ACS Clinical Oncology Career Development Award in 1995, and in 2000 he received an American Academy of Otolaryngology Honor Award. He is listed in the Academic Keys Who’s Who in Medical Sciences Education and America’s Top Doctors.

Dr. Funk is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve with the 1998th Head and Neck - Neurosurgical Team.  

Dr. Funk is frequently called upon to speak nationally and internationally. He serves as a consultant for the NCI - Tested Intervention Program, and is a trustee of the American Head and Neck Society foundation. Dr. Funk is the director of the annual Iowa Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery course.  He has authored or co-authored 101 peer reviewed publications and 16 book chapters. He has been an examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology for over 10 years and is the Head and Neck Section Editor for the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology.  

Dr. Funk’s research has focused on quality of life and functional outcomes following treatment for head and neck cancer. His recent NIH funded research focuses on long-term outcomes and survivorship issues confronting head and neck cancer patients. He has developed a head and neck survivorship clinic within the Department of Otolaryngology which has been open since August of 2011.
