The UVA Interview
Process
The University of Virginia’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Residency Program participates in the National Residency Match Program
(www.nrmp.org), and takes applications for residency exclusively
through ERAS (http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm) each fall.
Applicants interested in applying for residency, whether current
medical students, international medical graduates, or previously
unmatched applicants should apply directly through ERAS.To be considered, an applicant must have completed their ERAS application process, including:
Application review is done by committee at the University of Virginia, and decisions made to offer out interviews are anticipated to be complete before Thanksgiving week. Our interview dates this year are: December 3, December 17 and January 7. Invitations will go out on a rolling basis. There are limited interview spaces available, and they will fill on a first-come, first-served basis once invitations have gone out. Applicants will be notified of the dispensation of their file. There is limited availability for a second look should the applicant wish to come back after interviews have completed. Interested applicants should notify Mrs. Franke as soon as possible post-interview to arrange. Preparing for Your
Interview
Applicants are expected to arrive in Charlottesville the evening prior
to interviews as the day starts at 7:00am in the Orthopaedic
Administrative Offices at 400 Ray C Hunt Drive. Directions to our
offices can be MapQuested using the address “400 Ray C Hunt Drive,
Charlottesville, VA 22903.” The day is structured with morning
interviews, followed by afternoon tour of grounds and an informal
social event in the early evening.Interview Stations
The Match
The residency program at the University of Virginia consists of a
5-year categorical track. Applicants will provided with the match
number during their interview.Post-Match
Successfully matched applicants should contact Mrs. Franke at 434
243-0265 as soon as they can to start gathering paperwork for hospital
credentialing. Orientation dates for the University and Medical Center
are generally mid-June, with Orthopaedic Surgery orientation commencing
the following week. All in-coming residents must have completed all
required documentation before they will be allowed to start their
internship.The Student Externship
Program
The University of Virginia’s Orthopaedic Surgery Externship Program is
available each summer and fall for qualified 4th year medical students
from LCME medical schools. Interested applicants should submit an
application through the Student Affairs Office in the spring (usually
May for July-Sep rotations, and August for Oct-Dec rotations). The
program will take the student on THEIR SCHOOL’S rotation dates. The
University has transitioned in 2009 to utilizing the AAMC’s VSAS forms.

Students approved by the Committee are offered externship rotations and are given the opportunity to rotate for four weeks on available subspecialty services. Subspecialty services that may be offered include: • Adult Reconstruction (Joints) • Foot & Ankle Surgery • Spine Surgery • Pediatric Orthopaedics • Orthopaedic Trauma • Orthopaedic Sports Medicine • Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery Student Evaluations &
Letters of Recommendation
Student rotators are evaluated each week during their time with UVA
Orthopaedics by both faculty and residents. A composite evaluation and
grade will be sent to the student’s school. The rotating student should
bring their school’s extern evaluation form (if one is used) otherwise
the standard University Elective Rotation Evaluation form will be
used.Students wishing to request letters of recommendation from the Department Chair (Dr. Mark Abel), or Vice Chair/Residency Program Director (Dr. A. Bobby Chhabra) should contact Mrs. Franke to arrange interview time with the faculty. International Students
The University of Virginia does not allow medical student clinical
externships from non-LCME accredited schools at this time. Students
wishing to visit as an “observer” should obtain faculty sponsorship by
direct contact with an Ortho faculty member whose research interests
them. Please be advised that the Orthopaedic Surgery program accepts
two observer rotations per academic year (July 1 – June 30). |
