Xudong Joshua Li, MD, PhD

Joshua Li has maintained a strong and abiding interest in research in the molecular biology of intervertebral disc and arthritis diseases at the medical level he got his M.D. and Ph.D. in China and received his postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia started in September 1999, where he received the New Investigator Recognition Award based on his research on transcription factors and osteoporosis in 2001. He was awarded a Career Development Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) in 2004, which has provided him with the opportunity to learn cutting-edge research techniques from highly respected collaborators. In addition, he has been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Arthritis Foundation. In 2004, he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Research in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. His research continues to focus on intervertebral disc  and cartilage regeneration. Because of his outstanding and productive research record, he has obtained funding for his research from the North American Spine Society, the AO-International Research Foundation, the Musculoskeletal Transplantation Foundation and the CBI-FEST (Funding  Excellence in Science and Technology) Biomedical Translational Research Grant.  He was promoted to tenure- track eligible assistant professor in 2006.  He is currently well-funded by various agents including NIH, NIAMS, AO-International, Scoliosis Research Society, and MTF.

Beyond Orthopaedics

"Besides research, I also am enjoying alternative methods for
arthritis and back pain treatment, such as Tai-chi, Yoga and Falun Dafa.  I lead an exercise group, free to the public, at the Charlottesville Senior Center every Sunday 2:00 to 3:30 pm.  I have practiced Falun Dafa for 15 years." (
