Patient Stories:

Dear Dr. Arlet,

I would like to let you know how well I am doing since my back surgery in June of 2006. I am completely out of pain and never have to take any medicine even Tylenol! Before coming to University of Virginia I had two back surgeries which were unsuccessful.  I had spondylolysthesis, stenosis and scoliosis.  My first surgery was in December of 2002 which was a 10 hour surgery and the second one (which was a result of a complication from the first surgery) was in February of 2003 and was 6 hours long.  My pain increased continually, I could no longer stand up straight nor walk without a walker (I was 51 at the time). I couldn't sit at all as the pain was just horrible. I basically stood up and leaned on my walker or on a table. Driving was also unbearable, sometimes I had to look at my foot as I felt like a snake was biting it. I needed to have help for everyday tasks. Considering I had been a very active person (I was a professional figure skater till my back problems became so bad around the year 2000) my life had changed completely.

The Dr. I had been seeing only gave me a 50-50 chance that another surgery would help.  I was really feeling hopeless.  I went to many doctors from St. Louis and Baltimore to Atlanta and Miami.  Finally I was given Dr. Arlet's name at The University of Virginia and immediately called his office for an appointment.  From the first appointment I felt very confident that Dr. Arlet and the University of Virginia were going to be able to help me.  Of course there are never any guarantees but Dr. Arlet said that he could make me stand up straight.  I'll never forget hearing those words.  I began to have hope again.  The thought of having to undergo 2 more surgeries didn't discourage me at all. I finally felt that I found a doctor and a hospital that was experienced in operating on someone with my spine problems.  After thinking about everything on my way home (I live about 250 miles from Charlottesville).  I was ready to schedule the operation.  As I  am married with two teen-aged children it was important to arrange a good time to have the surgery done.  Dr. Arlet's staff was very helpful in answering all my questions.  My family was very comfortable visiting me. Best of all was waking up after the operation and not having that pain going down my legs!  I knew that the operation was successful!

The University has a rehabilitation facility that I went to after leaving the hospital.  That was also a very positive experience which helped my recovery significantly. Every day I am grateful for having my surgery at The University of Virginia and for Dr. Arlet.  At my yearly appointment I tell Dr. Arlet how much the surgery has done for me. I can walk standing up straight without a walker and I can sit and drive comfortably and I don't need someone to help me with everyday life. When I fill out those forms asking to evaluate my pain from 1-10, I am extremely happy to write zero. I seriously can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't gone to The University of Virginia.
