Dr. Dennis Vollmer joins our practice

Distinguished neurosurgeon Dr. Dennis Vollmer has joined our faculty to help us meet growing demands in spine care.  Dr. Vollmer has been a leader in neurosurgery for many years, as head of two academic neurosurgery programs in the University of Texas System, editorial board member of the Journal of Neurosurgery, and section editor for several textbooks on spinal surgery, among many accomplishments.  Dr. Vollmer also has substantial expertise in cerebrovascular conditions and will support our cerebrovascular team as well.

New England Journal of Medicine Publishes Exciting Results of Our Pioneering Use of Focused Ultrasound

The New England Journal of Medicine has published results of UVA neurosurgeon Dr. Jeff Elias's first trial using focused ultrasound, believed to have been the first intracranial therapeutic application of this exciting technology in the world.  The trial showed all 15 patients treated for Essential Tremor had significant improvement immediately and one year later.  Dr. Elias, along with UVA neurosurgeons  Neal Kassell and Jason Sheehan, as well as top radiation oncologists, radiologists and other specialists, are leading the development of focused ultrasound technology, which has exciting potential for drug delivery and to treat tumors, stroke, and movement disorders non-invasively.  Dr. Elias is now using the technology in a follow-on trial and in a new trial to treat Parkinson's Disease where tremor is the dominant symptom -- profiled in a recent BBC story--, and Dr. Sheehan has in development a trial to treat brain tumors. They were chosen through a comprehensive peer-review survey that asks: "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?" The database represents the top 3 percent of physicians in more than 400 medical subspecialties.

Chris Shaffrey, Mark Shaffrey and John Jane Jr. have been named to America's Top Doctors, and Chris Shaffrey has been named to a very select list of Top Spine Surgeons in North America by leading publication Orthopedics This Week.

Drs. Ashok Asthagiri and Webster Crowley join our practice

Dr. Ashok Asthagiri has joined our faculty as a neurosurgeon with an emphasis in research, education, and a clinical practice focusing on tumors, including genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis type 1 and 2, von Hippel-Lindau disease, tuberous sclerosis, and Sturge-Weber syndrome.  Dr. Asthagiri has developed expertise in these conditions while serving as clinical faculty at the NIH for seven years.

Dr. Webster Crowley has joined the faculty of our stroke and cerebrovascular team. Dr. Crowley completed a 2-year endovascular neurosurgery fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute and is one of a small number of neurosurgeons able to perform both open cerebrovascular and endovascular procedures for the treatment of intracranial and spinal vascular disorders.

Intraoperative MRI suite open

UVA has opened a new operating room suite equiped with intraoperative MRI and biplane angiography (which captures X-rays of arteries and blood flow), only the second such installation in the country. The biplane angiography allows for extremely targeted, image-guided treatment and the MRI allows our surgeons to verify that all parts of difficult tumors have been removed before surgery completion.  Dr. Mark Shaffrey performed the first procedure in the suite and many of our neurosurgeons have followed.  Read more at: http://uvahealth.com/services/neuro-oncology/imris-therapy-suite-for-brain-tumor-surgery.

First-in-class Surgical Training Lab Opens

UVA Health System, donors, and the departments of Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology have partnered to open a $2M+ state-of-the-art Microsurgical Anatomy Laboratory and Training Facility. This facility provides the means to educate medical students, residents, fellows, faculty and visiting health professionals on microsurgical anatomy, to encourage safe and precise surgical practice, and ultimately to improve the care of patients undergoing head, neck and spine procedures.  In addition to everyday training of our residents and health professionals, it will also host national and international courses and symposia focusing on microsurgical anatomy, and stimulate research and innovation to develop new surgical approaches and techniques.
