The High Cost of Head Pain
-
Adults and children who suffer from headaches -- including
migraines, cluster headaches and rebound headaches-- frequently find
relief through treatment by a neurologist. Headaches are the most
common of all neurological complaints. They are debilitating and
expensive -- migraines alone are an $18 billion a year problem in the
U.S.* These estimates include lost work time; but they do not consider
the effect of headaches on quality of life.
- A Gallup survey indicates that the average working patient
experiences one attack per month and calls in sick five times a year
because of migraines. About 30 percent of respondents say the disorder
has hindered their ability to compete in the workplace. More than 70
percent say migraines have hurt relationships with family and friends.
And nearly 50 percent complain that their family and friends don't
understand the seriousness of their condition.
