Treatment for HD takes many forms and involves not only the patient but family members as well. The University of Virginia offers a multidisciplinary clinic once a month for patients with HD. Specialty services include neurology, neuropsychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/swallowing therapy, social work, and genetics.
Medications can be effective in treating some of the common symptoms such as involuntary movements, depression, and anxiety. Other interventions such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy help the person with HD maintain a high level of functioning. This can improve the quality of life for the person with HD and for the family.
