Resident Testimonial - Dr. Lusa
"Throughout the residency interview trail I kept thinking back to the brief thirty hours I spent in Charlottesville for my interview at UVA. I was welcomed by the friendly and upbeat character of everyone I met that day, and was most impressed by the supportive nature of the program, which has more than lived up to my initial impression. All around, residents at UVA go out of their way to help each other and as an intern my upper level residents have been a wonderful mix of encouraging and inspiring. There is a strong resident-driven focus on constantly improving and innovating the IM residency program. As someone interested in outpatient focused specialties, I have appreciated the newest change to the 3+1 schedule that has created a nice balance of inpatient and outpatient medicine from the beginning of first year. The schedule also allows for a moment to regroup after a busy inpatient service. Overall, I could not imagine a better work environment than I’ve found here at UVA.
Another huge selling point for me was the town of Charlottesville and the beautiful surrounding area of Central Virginia. There are so many delicious dining options from the breweries closer to the Blue Ridge Mountains to tasty tapas right in town. It is always easy to find a group of residents willing to try out a new place. Within close driving distance from Charlottesville there are also plenty of outdoor attractions including hiking, kayaking & tubing, vineyards & fruit orchards. One of my favorite places to get fresh air after a hectic week in the hospital is the Monticello-Saunders trail that includes a gravel and boardwalk (tick-free!) path that winds through the woods. Life in Charlottesville as a resident is a perfect combination of affordable, comfortable, and entertaining. ”
