On-Call Schedule

On-Call Schedule

Call Cycle: The UVA Internal Medicine Residency Program functions with an every fourth day call cycle. The call team is responsible for admitting new patients to the service from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

On-Call Intern: 7:00AM-7:00 PM
The day typically begins with hand-off of night float admissions with the call day team and attending. The on-call team accepts new patients from 7:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening. Admissions from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM are held until the night team arrives at 8:00 PM. Cross-cover duties are signed over to the night intern. The day on-call team completes work on their patients and prepares to sign out to the night team.

Night Float: The University of Virginia operates with a night float system in order to reduce resident work-hours. Night float teams arrive at 8:00 PM and admit patients until 7:00 AM. Each inpatient rotation (except Acute Cardiology) has night float coverage 7 days per week, thereby allowing the day call teams to sign-out and spend some well-deserved time at home – sleeping in their own beds, eating dinner with their families, etc.

Cross-Coverage: 5:00-8:00 PM
Non on-call interns typically sign-out around 5:00 PM. Care of their patients is assumed by the on-call team until 8:00 PM when the night float intern arrives. Cross-coverage occurs simultaneously with on-call duties.
