Application Process

The University of Virginia Health System is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program. All applicants for first-year residency appointments must register with the NRMP. All applications to our program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Hard copy applications via regular mail or fax will not be accepted.

The deadline for accepting applications for entry in Summer 2012 will be December 31, 2011.

A Complete Application includes:
  • ERAS Application Form
  • Medical School Dean's Letter (or equivalent)
  • Passing the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 on the first attempt with a minimum score of 200. Step 2 (both parts) must be passed by the first day of orientation.
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • At least two Letters of Recommendation (in addition to the Dean’s Letter)
  • Personal Statement
  • Graduation from medical school within the last five years
  • One year of U.S. clinical experience
  • Valid ECFMG certification prior to appointment
  • We support J-1 visas

A formal interview is required to be considered for the program. Applications will not be reviewed in ERAS until they are complete. Upon review, interviews will be granted by e-mail notification. Interviews are conducted from November through January.
